Passion Project
2024
Originally part of my larger Zine 2024 project, this special issue emerged from a desire to give our family vacation the space it truly deserved. When I reached July in the zine, I quickly realized the content from our trip far exceeded the typical 1–2 pages I had allotted for each month—July alone stretched to four pages, and I still felt like I was leaving out moments that mattered.
Since we hadn’t taken a family trip together in a long time, it felt important not to minimize the experience. That’s when I decided to spin it off into its own piece—a standalone zine dedicated entirely to that vacation.
THE PROCESS:
Freeing it from the structure of the 2024 zine allowed me to take a different design approach. I shifted to a more minimal layout style, using clean white space to highlight the rawness and intimacy of our time together. I avoided heavy photo editing to preserve the authenticity of each image, letting the imperfections and spontaneity shine through. At the same time, I incorporated small bursts of bright color to reflect the playfulness and warmth of the trip—it was calm and chaotic, silly and heartfelt, all at once.
This project ended up being one of the most personal things I’ve ever designed. It became a way to not only relive the experience but to translate it into something tangible and lasting for the people who shared it with me. It reminded me of the power design has to preserve memory, celebrate connection, and turn ordinary moments into something sacred.
